An estimated 1.1 million Australians, or 4.5% of the population, are currently living with an eating disorder. Nearly a third of Australians are dissatisfied with their body. 27% of Australians with an eating disorder are under 19 years old, highlighting the urgent need for early intervention.
This presentation will offer practical tips around risk assessment for eating disorders associated with body image distortion, successful history-taking techniques and effective communication strategies to detect red flags. This session aims to equip General Practitioners with the latest knowledge and tools to effectively identify and manage eating disorders in general practice settings. Part of Hazelhurst CPD series.
Objectives of this talk:
- early warning signs and symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, and ARFID, and implement
- strategies to address effectively signs and symptoms
- comprehensive medical and dietary history taking and use of appropriate language
- diagnostic categories with focus on de-centering BMI
- risk assessments of the severity of eating disorders and associated health risks
- appropriate referrals based on eligibility criteria and different levels of care
- patient communication and support systems
- ambivalence and low carer concern, patient management in the community.
Target audience: GPs, Psychologists and Dietitians.
Other health professionals whose line of work is relevant to the topic are welcome to register.

We know that a team approach to eating disorder treatment is best practice, but how can we overcome the significant time, logistical and financial barriers to doing this in private practice?
Join clinic Director Emma Robertson, as she shares her insights and learnings from running a multidisciplinary Eating Disorder practice, about challenges such as:
- Establishing the minimum treatment team required to adequately treat EDs in the community
- Roles and overlap between disciplines
- How to work collaboratively when using a manualised treatment (such as Family based Treatment or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy- Enhanced)
- Use of the new mental health case conferencing Medicare items
- What effective inter-disciplinary collaboration looks like
- Suggestions for how to achieve all of this sustainably, while working in private practice.
