Constantly 'on-edge', anxious, or shut down?

Senior psychologist Bec explains why, and how Polyvagal Theory can help

Feeling 'on edge', anxious, or in constant fight or flight, or in emotional or sensory shut-down?

Psychologist Bec explains why, and how she integrates Polyvagal Theory into therapy, to help you move out of these states.

If you'd like to know how therapy can help you to feel more calm and in control of how you respond to triggers, this article is for you.

Do you ever find yourself feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or on edge, even when rationally, you know you're safe? This is one of the most common experiences people bring into therapy. Not just for our clients experiencing eating disorders, but a number of other mental health challenges with an anxiety component. It's often misunderstood as a personal flaw rather than what it actually is: a nervous system response.

Rather than asking "what's wrong with you?", polyvagal theory encourages a different question:

what is your nervous system trying to protect you from?

Our nervous system is constantly scanning for cues of safety or danger. It's often doing this below conscious awareness. When it detects threat, it can shift us into states like anxiety, fight-or-flight, emotional shutdown, or a sense of disconnection from ourselves and others.

These States Aren't Pathology. They're Protection

A key idea in polyvagal-informed therapy is that these responses aren't signs that something is wrong with you. They're protective states. They're patterns that may once have helped you get through genuinely difficult times. Your nervous system fired and wired itself this way to help you feel safe. That deserves respect, not judgment.

How Therapy Works With This

In polyvagal-informed therapy, the focus is on understanding these patterns with curiosity rather than judgment. By learning how your nervous system responds, you can start to:

  • Notice your triggers
  • Build greater self-awareness
  • Learn practical ways to help your body feel more grounded and regulated

What Changes with Therapy, and What Doesn't

This work won't make stress or anxiety disappear entirely. Life will always bring challenges! But with a more flexible nervous system, many people find they're better able to choose how they respond to situations rather than simply react to them.

Common outcomes people describe include:

  • Stronger emotional resilience
  • Healthier relationships
  • Greater self-compassion
  • A renewed sense of safety within themselves and in their body

It's Not About Fixing You

Polyvagal-informed therapy isn't about fixing you. It's about helping you understand yourself more deeply, and creating the conditions where healing and lasting change can happen.

If you've been feeling stuck in cycles of anxiety, overwhelm, or emotional shutdown, a polyvagal-informed approach may offer a compassionate way to understand what's happening beneath the surface, and help you reconnect with yourself, one step at a time.
